Minus the scare of virus

In my last blog post I spoke about traveling consciously, however, the situation today is very different.

Have you found yourself traveling around the city and encountered masked faces? No I am not talking about muggers or robbers or worse, kidnappers. I am talking about those taking the needed steps or precautions from viruses and germs.

Unless someone is living under a rock, we all know of the coronavirus and how rapidly it is spreading. Viruses are an epidemic and often have a snowball effect. If a person is contaminated with the virus, mere contact with them can be harmful. Inhalation of the bacteria and germs in the air spread by either sneezing or coughing by the infected person is also one of the ways that viruses can spread.

Travelers wear masks as they wait for their flights at Hong Kong International Airport on Jan. 21. The outbreak could affect global travel and tourism industries if it is not contained quickly, expert say.

With the widespread of this virus, it only seems fitting for me to inform you about food safety, especially when traveling outside your home country.

Vaccinate: Every country will have a different effect on you and being aware and mindful of how it will affect your body is vital. Given the period we live in, many low-income countries are often not the most sanitary. It is important to read up about the city or the country you are traveling to and get vaccines before you leave. Prescription drugs are saving grace during travel. The amount of times Advil has saved me during travel is countless. Opt-out of international medications as you may not be aware of the side effects of the medicine and its overall effect on your immune system.

Avoid raw produce or meat: Germs know no boundaries and it can easily enter your system through a variety of foods. Even in developed countries, a lot of food products are rinsed merely with tap water which may be contaminated. Avoiding raw produce and especially meat can be a smart decision. It can save you from getting ill or being exposed to bacteria.

Research about water: Water is one of the fundamentals we need to survive. The first question that you might ask when you travel would be, ‘is the water safe?’ In such a situation you should probably not drink water from water fountains or drink tap water. It could have bacteria and you would not even be aware of it. This includes cocktails or water offered at restaurants or even water you might use to brush your teeth. If you see a clean restaurant, don’t be fooled by its cleanliness. A lot goes behind the scenes that you would not know.

No adventure food: Traveling at this time is crucial. It’s time to curb your adventure junkie and settle for packaged food items as compared to street food or food that could have been out for a while. We all wish to have the overall experience of traveling to a country and exploring it. However, your health should always take priority. It is these times where we must avoid bizarre and adventurous dishes like a monkey or a rabbit or a snake.

Packaged food: Packaged food, packaged food, packaged food; does saying it thrice get your attention. I can’t reiterate this more. Packaged food is your way to go during times when infectious diseases are rampant. Always err on the side of caution and trust in food items that you have consumed before. Steer clear from experimenting and eat out of a packet.
